Whether it’s a lazy Sunday morning brunch or Tuesday afternoon coffee, I always love to go to Filo-Filo. This fairly new café is like a genuine piece of Greece on the Nieuwe Binnenweg. When you enter you will be enveloped by Greek language, music and the heavenly smell of warm pastry.
Inside it’s stylish, yet homely, with a brick wall along one side and pictures of Greece scattered here and there. The staff get extra brownie points for friendliness and thoughtfulness, placing a glass of water in front of you as soon as you sit down and giving advice on the best tea and their favourite pastries.
Even if you are short on cash you don’t have to fear that you will walk out of Filo-Filo with an empty stomach. The menu boasts a host of sweet and savoury pastries (bougatsa); some filled with cheese, bacon and ham, while others are stuffed with spinach and feta. If you have more of a sweet tooth you won’t be disappointed either as they serve warm pastries filled with custard or praline and sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon and they are delicious, trust me.
This little piece of Greece is worth a trip down the Nieuwe Binnenweg any day.
