Sculpture International Rotterdam takes care of the international art collection in the public space.
Look around if you come from Central Station and walk towards the centre, cross West Kruiskade towards the Westersingel. Along this canal (find the art pieces in the canal too!) which is partly a promenade, you will find sculptures from famous artists such as Moore, Rodin and Sapiro amongst many others.
Amazing international artists like Paul McCarthy’s ‘Santa Claus’ is at Eendrachtsplein. For several years it was located in a museum’s courtyard. I guess you can imagine why it offended people in the beginning. Locals call this sculpture the Gnome Buttplug.
When you pass the skatepark (now under construction), check for the ‘Watcher’ statue, I always think it looks like a Transformer :-).
If you decide to continue your way on the Westersingel towards West Zeedijk, at the corner of Museum park you’ll see a large Picasso sculpture. My favourite sculpture is Guiseppe Penone’s Elevazione, a bronze tree that is slowly elevated by nature itself.
A free map of the International Art Collection is available via the tourist office so get one and find your way through town by looking for all these pieces by famous international artists . Makes for a great stroll.
