I’ve skated and walked along the lake and through the forest of the Kralingse Bos often, but by coincidence I saw the climbing tracks of Fun Forest Rotterdam Climbing Park, high-up in the trees.
If you’re looking for adventure, Fun Forest offers an active experience in nature, for both young and old, for beginners and advanced climbers. There are 5 climbing routes of increasing levels of difficulty. From playful, exciting to challenging. The first 3 routes are suitable for children from 1.30m.
You start with instructions, practice on the ground and for your own safety they gear you all up before you climb the 4 meter high ladder that brings you to the first platform of a trail. Here you’ll get some amazing views over the lake. I found it very challenging with my fear for heights, but I pushed myself and loved the kick.
If you’re on your own you have to book a ticket online and always in advance. Groups can make reservations (throughout the year if the weather allows for climbing). Each climbing session takes 3 hours including instruction.
There are strict guidelines as there are some safety regulations: like children from 8/11 years (minimum length of 1.30m) can only climb accompanied by an adult and anyone under 18 years needs a signed statement by their parent/guardian for approval! Wear sturdy shoes and comfortable old clothes.
If you’re not into climbing, do have a drink/snack at their lake-view Boss-Kitchen.
For more excitement, try the SUP Experience on the lake. (Groups of min. 6 people).
