The shopping center of Rotterdam can be a busy place, especially on the weekends. While carrying your bags full of new clothing and food you just bought at the Markthal (check the Markthal article) you need a spot to relax. The Grotekerkplein is just what you need. Located in front of the Laurenskerk and close to the market on Blaak and the Markthal it makes for the perfect spot to escape to if all the people around you start getting on your nerves.
The square has become a frequently changing event venue. Since last summer I have come across a bunch of people dancing the tango, some guys making live music, an Asian food market and a small winter fair. Always a surprise but never a bad one.
When no event takes place you can just sit down on one of the many benches or take a nap on the ‘Flying’ Carpet and enjoy the calm and beauty of the city in the middle of the shopping centre. Extra tip: get yourself a freshly baked ‘stroopwafel’ (a delicious Dutch cookie) at the pop-up bakery called Markus, located in the shopping street next to the restaurant with big yellow M. Just the smell of it will make you smile in an instant.
A small selection of events takes place this summer: Rotterdam sings, secret yoga, a pop-up food truck and many more.
New plans have been announced, the square will become more green and accessible.
