In my series of green spots in Rotterdam (check out Het Park article and the Westersingel article) the Heemraadssingel may not be missed. It was also part of the Rotterdam water project and realized in 1900 and luckily the buildings along the singel were hardly damaged during the bombardments and the singel wasn’t filled with construction debris in WWII like happened to some other water courses in the city. So this makes the Heemraadssingel a perfect example of how the Rotterdam upperclass used to live a century ago.
The Heemraadssingel is the widest of all Rotterdam singels, which means it feels more like a park than a street. Located only 500m from my house, for me it is the perfect retreat for a Sunday morning stroll and it also serves perfectly as a running track. On the lush banks of the water you’ll find a number of artworks; and at the intersection with Nieuwe Binnenweg a couple of typical Rotterdam style bars are located.
The Heemraadssingel connects the area around Blijdorp zoo with Coolhaven. Give yourself some time and walk from one side to the other Guaranteed total relaxation!
