IKRotterdam – Urban Sketching

How to share something so typical for Rotterdam that’s hard to pin down as just one spot?

IKrotterdam is a visual city-guide seen and drawn by three gifted local illustrators that use 319 km2 of Rotterdam as their playground.

Since 2011 Evalien Lang, Ferry van Steijn and Marc Kolle collectively portray the city with their witty sketchy drawings, which can all be found on their blog IKrotterdam (only in Dutch).

As true fan #4, I follow IKrotterdam. It’s all fun to recognize places and get a dose of staycation just like they propagate, “I – don’t need to go on a vacation since I live in – Rotterdam” translated from “IK – hoef niet op vakantie want ik woon in – Rotterdam“.

Scroll through the themes, areas and archive on the blog and get a really nice impression of the city through time, from café scenes to food trucks, to locations of unprecedented international allure. Go find the lowest point in Alexanderpolder. See what South, Heiplaat, Crooswijk, Katendrecht, Esch… have to offer. See daily stuff and things that not necessarily make it onto city-must-see-do-lists, for some off-the-beaten-track inspiration!

You can buy IKrotterdam art-prints online. Their updated Rotterdam Panorama Poster is for sale in NAI Booksellers – located in Het Nieuwe Instituut‘s lobby.

The photo for this spot is a drawing by IKRotterdam, showing the space next to the Nieuwe Instituut in 2014. Once a place to let the dog out, now the New Garden

This is the list of shops spread over town that sell IKrotterdam stuff.
