Kiem Foei and Cong’s Place – For some tropical food

I still have a craving for real Surinamese cuisine as I’m from the former Dutch colony, Suriname.

What is ‘Surinamese cuisine’, you may ask? It’s hard to define but there was an interesting research about the origins of the dishes we have. For some it’s easy to tell like the nasi and bami goreng (fried rice and noodles) as they are from my other roots, Indonesia. Roti comes from motherland India, and there’s even a Jewish oven-dish known as ‘pom’.

Digging into the history of these dishes gives you an interesting history of how this country has shaped itself through its inhabitants and mixing not only their cultures but also their cooking.

Three places to challenge your taste buds are Kiem Foei or Cong’s Place at ‘China Town’ but I also frequent Happy Wok.

Kiem Foei’s ex/interior has undergone a bit of refurbishing and has a lot more space now. Eat in or order to-go. Cong’s a bit smaller. Happy Wok has great roasted pork or choose a snack. Buns filled with vegetables, meat or shrimps are more for snacking. But whatever you choose, get ready for some interesting flavours.

The Surinamese kitchen is a good choice in variety if you’re on a tight budget but don’t feel like cooking. If you want to cook your favourite Surinamese dish yourself, find the recipes online like this one or watch the series of Roti op de kaart where the challenge was to take the Surinam dishes to another level.
