It is well known by now that Rotterdam reinvents itself every now and then by breaking down what has gotten old and replacing it with brand new modern buildings. The central station is one of those spots that was under construction for a while. Though the central station was finished a while ago there is still enough going on around it. The new tower ‘The First’ is now opened and just recently the renewed Kruisplein was presented to the city.
Kruisplein now smoothly goes up into the Westersingel, which has created a somewhat strange view of the city. If you arrive in Rotterdam by train and you get out on the centre side of the station you will be flabbergasted by the space, the exterior of the station and the other buildings around it. If you continue walking straight on into the city you will walk from what’s brand new into a more classic part of the city along the canal called the Westersingel. It’s worth walking it all the way up to the ‘Westerlijk Handelsterrein’ to get some coffee at one of the many bars surrounding the ‘Veerhaven’. A beautiful little harbour full of beautiful boats in a beautiful part of the city.
