Oude Luxor – 100 years of cinema (and theatre)

Throughout the year, the Oude Luxor is a theatre and a music venue. For one and a half week in January, though, during the the IFFR, it dusts off its movie outfit and re-lives its glorious cinema past. It is also about the only time in the year I visit, but a screening at the Oude Luxor is something I look forward to throughout the year.

Of Rotterdam’s cinemas the Oude Luxor is my absolute favourite. Perhaps it has to do with the scheduling, and the type of movies they show at the Oude Luxor during the IFFR, but I’ve seen my share of horror, comedies or horror comedies here, like the unforgettable King Curling, the monstrous Frankenstein’s Army or the absurd Sightseers. It might also have to do with the pompous style – the high seating, the huge screen and the comfortably cushioned chairs, including the so-called ‘love seats’.

The Oude Luxor has been thoroughly rebuilt in the last year and they’ve sure retained that old-school charm. Sadly, for the taller among you, they haven’t increased the leg space though…
