Statensingel – The way through HappyVillage

Even though I pass this route at least twice a day I can’t really figure out why I have never written about this walk before. It’s green, it’s quiet, you can find a variety of ducks, birds and if you are lucky a beautiful white stork delivering babies to people in the neighbourhood of Blijdorp. (By the way: I don’t know if this line about the stork is something typically Dutch or not.)

Anyhow, the Statensingel is a street following a small singel all the way in to the heart of the district called Blij (happy) dorp (village). To me one of the finest districts of Rotterdam. It still has the authentic pre-war Rotterdam architecture, lots of green areas and it literally feels like a village though it’s just a few minutes away from Central Station. Once in Blijdorp you can find places like ‘Het Vroesenpaviljoen’ (check article: Het Vroesenpaviljoen) or when hungry you can get some food at Toko Toorop (check article: Toko Toorop).

Autumn has passed and winter is finding its way, how cool would it be to be able to go iceskating on the Singel. A few months ago some locals constructed a fine mini library open to everyone. Unfortunately it did not survive the autumn storms. Let’s hope they will create another one some day soon.

Enjoy!
