Even though I pass this route at least twice a day I can’t really figure out why I had never written about this walk before. It’s green, it’s quiet, you can find a variety of ducks, birds and if you are lucky a beautiful white stork delivering babies to people in the neighbourhood of Blijdorp. (By the way: I don’t know if this line about the stork is something typically Dutch or not).
Anyhow, the Statensingel is a street following a small singel all the way in to the heart of the district called Blij (happy) dorp (village). To me it’s one of the finest districts of Rotterdam. It still has the authentic pre-war Rotterdam architecture, with lots of green areas, and it literally feels like a village, though it’s just a few minutes away from the Central Station. Once in Blijdorp you can find places like ‘Het Vroesenpaviljoen’ (check article: Het Vroesenpaviljoen) or when hungry you can get some food at Toko Toorop (check article: Toko Toorop).
Unfortunately the small neighbourhood library got caught by a spring storm, again. I already have seen locals finding other ways to spend time, like throwing a barbecue!
