As a theatre director I love to work with amateur theatre players. They are really addicted to theatre. For them it is not work but just play. This is also why I like to visit ‘t Kapelletje. A small theatre on the second floor of an old convent for nuns, now completely redecorated. It used to be the chapel and that is the origin of the name, ‘t Kapelletje. Hard to find if you are not a local, hidden in a side street of the Schiekade.
Here you can see amateurs doing their best to perform the classics, the modernists, the absurdists, comedies, farces and enjoy theatre sport. Every kind of style has been performed here.
Highlights of the season are the opening night of the fall season with hidden theatre. This is theatre all over the place from the rooftop to the toilet (in September). And the Festival of Monologues. Only one actor or actress on stage performing a monologue. The Festival of Monologues takes place in November. Last but not least they produce a ‘panto’ around Christmas too. This English tradition has been exported to Rotterdam and attracts a lot of visitors (mainly children).
So don’t feel put off by the word amateur, check out ‘t Kapelletje and be surprised.
