In Amsterdam, I love going to rotisserie Van ‘t Spit. When I heard they were going to open a restaurant in Rotterdam, I was so excited that I promised I would write about them – but only if their chicken would be as tasty and juicy as in Amsterdam! Well, what more do I need to say ;).
The concept is simple and the food is good. You choose 1/2 or 1/1 roasted chicken and order some side dishes to share. Everything is homemade, fries, BBQ sauce, spicy Piri Piri sauce, garlic mayonnaise, mango red onions, coleslaw, green salad, sweet potato mash and the corn, except their ketchup.
The interior is simple and cozy with the grill as the center piece. I have great respect for the chefs that they can stand the heat.
You can sit in or outside and they don’t take reservations. If you have to wait to be seated, just order a drink and enjoy watching the crowd.
They are located in Kralingen (East) on a dike, in a corner building, next to a walled Jewish cemetery (1696 – 1820). Close to cafés, Kitchen in The Student Hotel, Alohabar and Bakkerswinkel.
Van ‘t Spit closes at 01:00, which makes them one of the few places in Rotterdam where you can dine till late.
I like to have a place to go when I don’t feel like cooking and where you can get good value for money, so it’s definitely worth the bike ride (or tram 24 or 7).
