Hoogkwartier is my habitat. This neighborhood around the second stretch of Hoogstraat hosts lots of unique shops and my favourite bar ‘Verward’.
They opened in 2016 with the help of many involved crowd-funders, which explains their instant success.
Verward, means confused in Dutch and is also a word play, as this wonderful place is owned by two friends, Bas and Ward. Great guys with hospitality running through their veins.
There are not many bars where I like to go alone, but Verward is a perfect place to do so. Just find yourself a seat at the huge bar, that runs from one side to the other side of this space, and blend in.
A nice mix of people visit Verward: young professionals, creative people and locals. Always friendly and often very funny in my experience. There are also some small tables, two lounge chairs and a windowsill to sit and chat.
Go tell Ward what you like to drink and he’ll surprise you with a good glass of wine, special beer, good coffee. I like the Wostok prunes and cardamom lemonade.
Bas makes you some tasty finger food, try their pork belly or cheese platter.
We all go early, as Verward closes at 23:00, what makes this a good starting point for a night out.
In front of Verward is a terrace for smokers and great for soaking up the sun till late.
Tip: sign up for Bass famous Sunday food deal,: delicious-seasonable-comfy food served at 19:30 (max 16 people! €12.50/15,- a dish excluding drinks)
