If you look in from the outside, Lastochka Bakery seems like a regular, quaint café/bakery – the kind you can find all around St. Petersburg. It has a few scattered tables, some bookshelves on the walls, and chalked-up blackboards with the specials and other info. And Lastochka is definitely a great place to sip on coffee and read a book, but its real treasure is found once you go inside and look behind the glass pastry display case.
This is because at Lastochka, you won’t find the ordinary slate of pastries carried by other bakeries and confectioneries in St. Petersburg. Instead, you will meet salted caramel peanut brownies, nut-covered éclairs the size of hot dogs, and other one-of-a-kind, delicious treats. My personal favorites are the cinnamon roll and a sweet cheese pastry called a sochen.
The desserts at Lastochka have that extra punch that makes it worth making the trip here – and the beautiful view of the river doesn’t hurt either. Grab a seat under the painted swallows (which is what the word lastochka actually means) and enjoy your dessert!
