I am not a fan of any sport, maybe only figure skating on TV during the Olympics but live-hockey once a quarter is a must. Definitely when St. Petersburg club SKA is playing in the Ice palace.
First of all, there is an enormous fan spirit before and during the game, like other locals we come in big groups of friends, families or even colleagues, everybody including little kids is wearing scarfs, caps or T-shirts with SKA symbols, everybody is singing and crying like hell and even if you are not a great hockey fan you will become one after a couple of minutes.
Second of all, I always enjoy the show around the game with live music and professional actors – the last couple of times there was also a choir of over 50 participants singing on ice accompanied with a light show. The hall has the perfect acoustics as it is used for musical concerts as well.
And last but not least – the SKA team is really strong, winning several continental championships. The Ice palace itself is also worth a visit. Being constructed at the end of the 1990s for the World Hockey Championship in 2000 it is one of the most modern and attractive places for sports and musical shows.
