I had been to l’Ardoise Bistro a couple of times, but it was at the birthday party of a great friend that it left the strongest impression on me. L’Ardoise already had the reputation of being a great little French bistro – reliable, excellent food, pretty close to what one could enjoy in any sidewalk bistro in Paris – charcuterie, escargot en gueusaille, coq au vin, etc. Everything that I have ordered I have always thoroughly enjoyed.
The French staff made such an impression, however, on what others might have considered an annoyance. At the birthday party, we switched champagnes between appetizers and dinner. There was a slight delay in getting the second champagne, because the staff insisted on changing all the glasses – which instead of a problem was to me a representation of the high level of service in a relatively simple neighbourhood bistro.
The great service, cozy, intimate atmosphere and excellent food complete the enjoyment of this little corner of Paris in San Francisco.
