Whenever out of town friends come to visit, especially from Europe, I always make sure they get at least an hour to shop at Sports Basement. This sporting goods store, which is located in a former army post grocery store in the Presidio, not only offers great gear for many sports at discounted prices, they also are very active in local sporting events, especially road races.
I have received and used several coupons I got with a race pack for additional 10-20% discounts off the already low prices. European friends tell me the equipment, clothes and other stuff Sports Basement offers is usually at least half the price they would have to pay in their home countries.
Sports Basement has a wide range of gear and supplies – everything for biking, running, yoga, camping, skiing, tennis – I always stop in before heading to Yosemite, or to get my bike tuned up in springtime. For a constant runner like me, they have a good range of running shoes and helpful salespeople, so I always stop in when my treads are getting low.
There are two locations in San Francisco, and both offer rental equipment such as skis and snowboards, bicycles and wetsuits – a really convenient service for travelers heading to the mountains or the beach. Rental options include electric and tandem bikes. There is one other location in SF (Bryant Street) and five other locations in the Bay Area.
