Bars, cafes or restaurants with an outdoor area are few and far between in San Francisco. With the exception of a few places with sidewalk tables, enjoying a lunch or beer outside requires intrepid searching and/or planning, not to mention a jacket or sweater. Even so, the reason for this dearth of al fresco space still eludes me. One space that fits the bill, however, for a casual beer on the patio, a sunny Sunday brunch or an enjoyable indoor dinner is the Tipsy Pig on Chestnut in the Marina.
I have seen many restaurants come and go in this space, but the Pig has lasted longer and for good reason. The fried chicken sandwich is exactly what you expect it to be. There’s trusted comfort food like chicken pot pie, and twists on standards, like sweet potato French fries and a smoked salmon BLT. The old fashioned bar offers specialty mixed drinks and a nice selection of local microbrews and imported beers.
I enjoy the casual and local atmosphere that still allows attention to details, such as the interesting wine list and well presented plates. The outdoor patio lets locals like me take advantage of sunny weather without risking the often disruptive and cool nearby ocean breeze. One caveat – the bar area can get pretty loud on busy weekend nights.
