Old Jewish Cemetery – Melancholic history

This is one of the most valuable memorial complexes in Europe and it’s been part of this city for five centuries. It’s specific because tombstones remind of “Stećak” which is medieval Bosnian tombstones. So these tombs are unique in form and their symbolic motifs you can’t find anywhere else in the world.

Some poets found inspiration here and wrote about these monuments calling them “sleepy lions”. What I find most interesting about this place is that on the stones there are whole stories written about the lives of the people buried there, like their relations with their family and friends. Some even tell stories about the feelings of people who lost their dear ones. Another thing I found interesting were the empty tombs. I found out later they were for the ones who experienced a tragic fate during World War II and whose grave is not known.

Within the cemetery there is also a chapel and if you walk in and go straight on top you will find a white pyramid-like monument that is built for the victims of the holocaust. If you ask me, even if it seems a little morbid going to the cemetery during your holiday, when in Sarajevo this is a place that must be visited. The feel of the city may make more sense to you after you have been here…
