Placed in Hastahana park in the Austro-Hungarian neighborhood Marijin Dvor, Sternenweg is my favorite sculpture in the whole city. Made by German artist Helmut Lutz as a symbol of friendship between Sarajevo and Friedrichshafen, it was a gift to this city representing creativity, labour and love between people.
I first saw this sculpture before I knew what it was representing and before I knew so much about art at all. The first time I noticed it, I was convinced it was a time machine and if you figured out how to make it work it would take you somewhere else for sure. Hastahana park is also known as a skate park and is usually full of teenagers. Because of the scale and composition of the sculpture, you will usually find people that managed to climb onto it for a “selfie opportunity”. Over time, parts of it got covered in graffiti, but in my opinion that hasn’t taken anything away from – it’s just made it look like some old forgotten machine that’s waiting to be put in use again.
After all this time and years of studying art, I remember what my first impression of it was and I get excited visiting it because I see it is exactly what I thought of it as – making people stop to engage with it and taking them somewhere else.
