Like most of the Balkan’s countries, ours is also famous for one speciality. When tourists come here, the first two kinds of food they ask to try are the Shopska salata and burek, stuffed pastries to which no one could say “no”.
In Skopje, there is lot of bakeries, or as we call them burekdzilnicim specialized at making burek, but only few of them make really tasty ones. Bakery “Samba” is one of them. I am over-enchanted by the variety of baked specialities which can be found on the shelves in a little 8 square meter bakery. Five minutes are not enough for me to decide which one of their products to buy… So I always hesitate on what to eat: there’s gjevrek, perek, proja with corn flower and white cheese, veggie pizza, rolled pastry with cheese, ham, mushrooms… and of course burek, as the king of Balkan pastries.
This speciality is made from thin flaky dough (also known as a hullo or filo) filled with different ingredients. There is spinach, white cheese, sausage meat, pizza burek… it depends of the taste. I am fan of the white cheese one, crunchy and warm, just taken out of the oven. A glass of yogurt will make a perfect combination with this amazing meal, which has me totally addicted.
