If you wander through Skopje as a tourist, it is very unlikely that you’ll find this magical place, although it is located in the very center of the city, opposite the City hospital. That is the location where I spend almost every morning, enjoying the colors and the aromas. The Green market is one of the best supplied markets in the city, where you can find all kinds of vegetables and fruits, and all that for a decent price. The beauty is in their freshness and their home-made production, so that every day I come home with a bag full of fresh ingredients, produced by locals who have fields in the areas surrounding the city. The market is located amongst the high buildings known as the City wall, so you can’t see it from the main street.
When I go to the market, I feel like I’ve entered the realm of vitamins. Each of the stalls is full of seasonal fruit and vegetables. In autumn there is a variety of grapes, blue prunes, chestnuts, pumpkins, apples, pears, salad, eggplants or different types of peppers, such as the famous Macedonian pepper called “ajvarka”, from which the local specialty “ajvar” is prepared. During the spring and the summer you can find fresh onions, carrots, broccoli, pickles, tomatoes, strawberries, zucchini, apricots, peaches, watermelons… You can also find organic vegetables and fruit. Every Tuesday and Friday it’s a market day, so you can find even more things at extra low prices.
