There are places which, despite being very centrally located, somehow remain hidden. Before & After is one of them. Located at Hristo Belchev street you probably won’t notice it. I wouldn’t have either if my colleague hadn’t told me about it. He once said “I know one place with very nice cuisine and great elder wine”. Elder wine sounded quite tempting so soon we ended up at Before & After after work for some wine and food tasting.
The choice was difficult because of the diverse menu but Before & After justified our expectations, the food was excellent and the elder wine was even better than expected. I thought that it would be very sweet but in fact it is not, it has a very nice smell and mild taste.
After a couple of visits I learned that the building in which the restaurant is located was the house of the famous Bulgarian poetess Mara Belcheva. The place was a meeting point for many cultural events in the beginning of the 20th century and the interior was carefully restored to retain the atmosphere of the past. One of the most remarkable things there is the old fountain in the centre of the restaurant. Before & after is also famous for organising tango dances every Sunday.
Despite the classy interior the restaurant is very reasonably priced for what it offers which makes it an equally good choice for an unpretentious dinner with friends or for a more special occasions like family gathering or birthday party.
