Let me say something as a historian. Sofia has always been famous for its healing waters. Ever since B.C. people were taking benefits of the hot mineral springs here – Thracians, Romans, Ottomans and Bulgarians. A lot of them believed that they got well after visiting the ancient Serdica’s SPA. A reason for Sofia to be so advanced during the ancient times is that some of the healed invested in the development of the city.
Now, let me tell you something as a local. We don’t do that nowadays. Most of the public baths are abandoned and from about 40 springs on the territory of the city, only a few are used. The rest of them are closed and the water is going simply underground.
But in the very centre of the city, there is one functioning and a favorite place for many people. The hot water is pouring out without stopping. A lot of people are coming here to fill their bottles and take the healing water home. It is hot, tasteless, low mineral, which makes it good for drinking everyday and not smelly. During the weekend there are many people and sometimes waiting in a queue. A lady with a pleasant voice often sings church and love songs there.
The charm of the place is vivid especially during the winter. Next to the piled snow the steam of the hot water is rising up. Passing by you can warm your hands and have a few sips of pure health.
