If you have been in Bulgaria for a while and have had enough traditional food or you just want to try something different, here is an alternative for you – Tuga bar & restaurant, a small Portuguese gem a bit off the beaten path in Sofia. The owner is a friendly lady from Porto who is frequently there and sometimes even serves the customers herself. If the place is not too busy, you might be able to catch her for a chat and learn why she has decided to relocate to Bulgaria. She is always keen on explaining what the dishes include and recommending the best wines to go with them.
Talking about the wines, Tuga offers a truly enchanting experience for the taste buds with its great variety from all regions of Portugal. After I returned from a trip to Lisbon, I happily found my favorite – the amazing vinho verde – offered here. Some of my preferred meals from the menu include the octopus Lagareiro, which you might not even be able to find anywhere else in Sofia, the Tuga chicken and the obligatory dessert pastel de nata.
Entirely in the spirit of small Portuguese restaurants, Tuga’s appeal is in its friendly service and delicious food, therefore do not expect a fancy or pretentious atmosphere here. The place is compact and includes a small outdoor sitting area, where you can enjoy your chilled wine.
