Stockholm is full of places claiming to be authentic Italian cafés. Not many of them are really Italian, and even fewer serve actual real Italian food with Gelateria Italiana being one big exception!
This unassuming” hole in the wall” is run by an Italian family and has all the traits of a great Italian café. The espresso is strong and straightforward, the food simple and flavorful and the pastries rich and traditional. They have grilled focaccias and paninis and simple ham or tuna sandwiches. Not to mention that they serve up some of the best sorbets and ice cream in Stockholm. My absolute favorite is the lemon sorbet which is tangy and perfectly balanced – be sure not to leave without trying some!
Best of all is that it’s cheap and familiar. The décor is way simple – a couple of plastic table and chairs and an outdoor serving area facing the busy bus stop. And it’s just absolutely perfect in a city of over-decorated cafés and restaurants. A recommendation is to pick up food to go, and have a picnic in one of the many adjacent parks or at the waterfront close by.
