A cozy restaurant with the sweetest welcoming staff, affordable prices and food that does not match these prices, in a good way, just a few steps from the main square. Sounds unlikely, huh. Every traveller knows that the restaurants around the main square are not for eating, the prices do not match the food, in a bad way and the staff doesn’t really care since well, you’re a traveller and are not likely to return tomorrow.
Rataskaevu 16 is an exception to that rule. The warm little restaurant turns out fresh local food that would fit a five star restaurant and all that with very reasonable prices. You can try a variety of very Estonian dishes like fried baltic herring and do not miss bread pudding as a dessert, it really is as your Estonian grandmother would make it.
Make sure to book ahead, since you have to be very lucky to get a table just walking in.
