National Gallery of Arts is one of my favorite places in Tirana, not only because I’ve been going there since I was a child and I really love arts, but because it is a very interesting place for both visitors and tourists in Tirana, but also for locals.
The National Gallery of Arts has been through hard times, and sometime I feel like art is a little bit underestimated, but it remains the most important institutions for exhibition, conservation, restoration and archiving the works of art. Some of the most important resident exhibitions are the Beginning of the painting in the Albanian cities (1883 – 1930), Realist paintings and the Drawing School (1930 – 1950), Socialist Realism, Creation of the Models of the New Man (1960 – 1989), Modernist painting and sculpture (1989 – 2001) etc. The Social Realism is a very large section and reflects the influence of the dictatorial regime in the art. Beside all the residents there are also always, interesting new modern exhibitions.
