After returning from a trip to Australia a few years ago, I’ve had mad hankerings for the wonderful food that is Australian Meat Pies. After a decent amount of Internet research, and some half hearted questions around, I accepted the fact that I would likely have to return to Sydney if I ever wanted to eat one ever again.
This summer, I had a friend from Down Under move here to Toronto. Within a week, he asked “have you been to Kanga?” (Australians must have a nose to sniff out things from home.) And yes, of course, there had been a specific place for these hearty little pies the entire time! He went to Kanga first and gave me the green light that it was the real deal.
It only took me a few days (that I counted by the hour, believe me) until I found myself there. There were several options. I decided to opt for “the Kiwi” and “the Canadian” upon the recommendation of my friend. The first bite was love and I’ve been back several times since. Although I can’t wait to try the all the other options. (A few coffee shops around the city also have them available, check the website)
NOTE: Even after a few attempts, I still haven’t mastered the art of eating one of these allegedly “handheld” pies neatly with just my hands. Best to utilize a knife and fork if you don’t want gravy and meat all over your face and clothing.
