Ah, brunch: the great Canadian pastime. I’m lucky to have enjoyed my fair share of breakfasts around the world, but the best ones have always been in Canada. Honestly! There is nothing quite like sleeping in on a Saturday or Sunday morning and wandering over to your local spot for relaxed brunch and coffee with friends. I feel very lucky on those days.
My “local”, nestled in a quiet West Queen West residential neighbourhood, is a cute restaurant by the name of Luna Cafe. A small, cozy space in a converted house with creaky wooden floors and soft natural light, their breakfast menu offers a wide selection ranging from various egg dishes to pancakes to homemade granola. My last meal, I savoured poached free-run eggs with chive hollandaise, smoked trout, sweetly caramelized red onions and roast potatoes on a bed of arugula, and my friend a breakfast wrap with fluffy scrambled eggs, avocado and brie. I also thoroughly enjoy their Shakshouka, a Middle Eastern dish of eggs poached in a savoury, spicy tomato sauce with Merguez sausages and feta cheese (but it’s only available on weekdays). Yum.
You’ll leave feeling warm and relaxed (in equal parts from the atmosphere, delicious food and hopefully, good company) and comfortably full. A lovely way to start a weekend morning… or any morning, for that matter!
