It can be challenging to find a snack that isn’t a sweet pastry, processed food or plain fruit (I have nothing against any of the above, especially fruit! But sometimes you just need something warm, filling and satisfying that doesn’t make you feel sad after eating it or that doesn’t require a sit-down meal.
Enter Segovia Meats. There are many Latin American shops in Kensington Market that offer savoury fare to go, but to date, Segovia remains my personal favourite for their empanadas. There is nothing particularly interesting about the space itself (it looks like a standard meat market), but the food is very good and does the trick. Personally, I opt for the “Humita” (filled with a delicate corn mash, basil, sautéed onions and spinach) or the beef and egg empanadas, and am sure to load up on the delicious homemade hot sauces on the side. The pastries are baked, not fried, and fill me up just enough to tide me over until my next proper meal, and at $ 4.25, I don’t feel like I’m breaking the bank. You can also buy raw sausages to cook at home.
Give Segovia Meats a try, whether you are passing through Kensington on your way somewhere else, or actually hanging around.
