To be honest, winter in Toronto is usually a time of hibernation for me. At this time of year, going skating is one of the very few things that can get me to leave my “den”… Although the promise of alcohol usually gets me moving pretty quickly too.
There are quite a few ice rinks in and around the city, but the one at city hall is for sure my favourite; it was the first place I ever went skating! The holiday lights and music add to the downtown/festive vibe of the rink and a host of events & markets throughout the cold season also add to the overall experience.
On evenings and weekends it gets pretty busy on the ice with smiles and laughter abound. It’s a pretty worry free activity to come here with a group of friends (or on a date) because there are all ages and abilities around you… Although watching 5yr-olds skate circles around you is bound to arouse anyone’s insecurities. Wear a warm pair of socks and if you don’t have skates, you can rent a pair. Even if skating isn’t your thing, watching the zamboni clean the ice is mesmerizing even if you’re over the age of 12.
