Las Tortas is an adorable little sub shop in the bustling Cambie Village that serves some of the best lunch food in the area.
The main feature is their warm, flavourful torta subs – various meats, fresh and pickled veggies, with authentic Oaxaca cheese, grilled and served in a crusty roll. The styles range from traditional Pierna (a sort of pulled pork) and Mayan-style Pollo Pibil (roasted chicken in orange achiote marinade) to more international, modern versions like the Milanesa (breaded beef sirloin). There are even breakfast-type subs, with eggs and sausage.
I’m usually there for the subs, but they do serve a couple other Mexican dishes, like tacos, burritos, etc. If you are really hungry, you can add a drink and a side dish for $ 4. I highly recommend the horchata – a traditional drink made of rice, vanilla and cinnamon, though I swear it tastes like coconuts.
The space is clean and bright, with cheery, friendly staff and some small tables. You can also grab a sub to go. They pack it very nicely so it stays warm, and you can sit and eat it in nearby Douglas Park.
