When we are close to Rialto Bridge, my boyfriend automatically starts looking for Rosticceria Gislon. The reason why he loves this place is his addiction to “mozzarella in carrozza”. What is mozzarella carrozza (literally mozzarella in carriage)? A typical food that everyone probably hashtags as #pornfood and the most famous street food you can find in Venice.
The origins of the meaning are not certain, maybe it’s because there are mozzarella carried between two slides of bread or because the recipe was born in Campania where milk (the first ingredient to make mozzarella) was carried on a carriage. The recipe is simple but it is not so easy to find a good version. A fried sandwich filled with mozzarella can contain different ingredients such as salmon (my favourite one) ham or just anchovies.
The rotisserie Gislon was born in the ’30s and the furniture has never been changed, and indeed this is not the place to have a romantic dinner. Gislon is a good spot to stop to have a glass of wine, to taste a delicious risotto for lunch and of course to take away a mozzarella in carrozza.
