This is probably not the first church you’ll visit in Venice, but it should be a church to include in your trip plan. San Francesco della Vigna is located in the Castello District (Sestriere), nowadays the most genuine and authentic of Venice. Here you can easily wander through the alleyways and squares flanked by picturesque houses and forget to be a tourist.
The renaissance facade of the church was designed by the famous and influential architect Palladio, and it is one of the most beautiful in Venice. Actually, the Church stands beside a Monastery which has two cloisters. The bigger one has the statue of Saint Francis in the middle, and back in the day it was used as cemetery. Here you can find the graves of many Venetian noblemen. A place where to find peace.
The entrance to the Church and to the cloister is free (not so frequent in Venice). After visiting the cloister don’t forget to admire Bellini’s painting in the close (but a little bit hidden) room.
