I had wanted to visit San Lazzaro for a long time, so I took this opportunity when a friend of mine from the center of Italy came to visit me. Trust me, this is the proof that there is always something new to discover in Venice even if you were born here.
In San Lazzaro degli Armeni has housed the Armenian Monastery of San Lazzaro since 1717; indeed the whole island belongs to the monks and for this reason if you want to include this spot in your trip you have to remember that there is only one ferry boat to get there daily at 15:25. Here you can admire cloisters, ancient and modern libraries and a beautiful church. Thanks to the guided tour (it is the only way to visit the island) you have the opportunity to not only discover hidden treasures but to also learn something about Armenian history (that is not often mentioned in the history books).
In winter on the terrace of the island you can enjoy one of the most beautiful sunsets in all of Venice, admiring the lagoon and in the distance the bell tower of San Marco. The same sunset enjoyed by John Byron who lived on this island for one year.
