Dragonerhäufel – Pick a picnic

Despite the fact that almost a third of its landmass is to the east of the Danube, Vienna’s best spots are disproportionately concentrated to the central, southern and western areas of the city. Transdanubien, as the ‘other side’ of the river is known locally, is sadly bereft of spots. However, that’s not to say that this rich, lively area of the city is any less worthy of a mention. Floridsdorf, for example, is a vibrant, multi-cultural district of Vienna which has S-Bahn connections, good heurigen, and plenty of green spaces.

Dragnonerhäufel is one such place. An expanse of grass stretching for about half a kilometre on a ‘beach’ next to the old Danube, this is a most wonderful spot for a picnic – if you can find space to spread out, that is! Alfresco dining not the only thing that attracts people: there’s fantastic opportunities for swimming in the ‘old Danube’, which is now a sort of lake following the regulation of the great river, and there are also plenty of boats and floats for those who want to go out on the water without getting wet.

This is also a great location for families with children, and the fact that there are facilities for volleyball and plenty of grass for frisbee and ball sports, you can be sure that there will be an eclectic mixture of people stationed there in the summer months. A fantastic spot for a lazy summer’s afternoon, or a perfect place for a walk with ice-cream.
