In Austria asylum seekers, as long as their application is still in progress, are not allowed to work. Yet here they can! They cook dishes from their former home – for you.
The menu of the day is set out fresh every 24 hours and afterwards posted on the famous blue book. You get specials from around the globe with original recipes from the respective residents, and there’s always also a vegetarian/vegan version. So depending on when you drop in your food might be Afghani, Burmese, Chinese, Ethiopian, Greek, Himalayan/Nepalese, Indian/Pakistani, Moroccan, Russian, Thai, Turkish or Vietnamese. Fixed menu items are fried and fresh Somali Sambouzas, Georgian Hatschapouri and the Vodka plate, additionally you’ll find organic drinks.
For the dish of the day, including either an appetizer or a dessert, the refugees at Purple Eat will ask you to kindly pay € 7 – which I personally think is a hell of a good deal since portions here are BIG. Staff are volunteers and work free of charge. Everything you’re consuming at the purple market stall will flow directly into the hands of refugees in Vienna. So if you too feel like they undercharge, just tip a little extra.
Smokers are well received visitors but asked to do so outside. Besides that, the Purple Eat is happy to welcome kids, dogs and basically everyone who enjoys a relaxed and warm atmosphere.
Last note: if you are not able to access the famous blue book, better call in for information, their website isn’t exactly up-to-date ;).
