Schottentor – Hanging out at the traffic junction

Schottentor is a central place at the border of the 1st and 9th district. As Vienna’s biggest hub of tram lines, directly situated at the Ringstraße it is hard not to pass by at least once. But Schottentor has much more to offer than just good public transport connections.

Here the main building of the University of Vienna is located, as well as several more university departments in other buildings. The undisputed eycatcher is the Votiv church. In front of it, there is the Sigmund-Freud-Park, a green in the middle of it where during the summer at daytime canvas chairs invite for a rest. Mainly young people, among them many students used to hang out here between their lessons and gain some sun.

Sitting here I experience both: the feeling of being in the heart of Vienna and at the same time in an relaxing atmosphere, even more than anywhere in the very city center.

In winter, surprisingly this spot is still not used for a Christmas market, so the students prefer to sit in one of the many, cosy cafes which frame Schottentor such as Cafe Stein or Cafe Maximilian.
