This is the type of place that really embodies a stay in Vienna. Wieden is your typical brewery bar. You know the sort – schnitzel, burgers, meaty, deftiges Austrian cuisine, and it can all be washed down with a Krügel or three – that’s Austrian for ‘pint’ by the way – of their home-brewed lager beer.
Out at the back there is a beer garden of a generous size, which is always full and very pleasant – I celebrated my birthday here a couple of years back, and even though it was in September, I would not have found a place to sit had I not reserved a table.
One of the venue’s better points is its fantastic location, being about halfway between Karlsplatz and the Vienna Ring Road on the Wiedner Hauptstraße. It is well served by tram routes 1 and 62, as well as the Wiener Localbahn (WLB), a tram that runs between Vienna and Baden in Lower Austria. Even though it’s close to the Naschmarkt, there are surprisingly few tourists in this area. I also consider the fourth district to be one of Vienna’s finest. So, after all that food, you can go on a nice long walk to help it digest.
