Cathedral Heights boasts up-close views of the National Cathedral and a local vibe since it’s nowhere near a metro stop. But the extra effort is worth it to enjoy the cathedral lawn and architecture. If you mention to any local you’re on your way to Cathedral Heights, they’ll ask if you’re also headed to Cactus Cantina.

It didn’t take me long to understand why Cactus Cantina is a neighborhood favorite. The restaurant is enormous so there is rarely a wait but the best place to sit is near the front by the big windows or on the patio. However, don’t let the size fool you. The Mexican inspired decor is bright and inviting.

Sip margaritas by the glass or pitcher with a robust selection of tequila. My favorite way to sample a little of everything is to get one of their platters. These come with different combinations of enchiladas, tacos, and tamales. They have chicken, beef, and cheese but my favorite is the chicken.

Cactus Cantina is open seven days a week and has happy hour specials Monday to Friday from 15:00 to 18:00.
