On those days that I need a little more flavor and color in my life, I head over to 14th and T Streets Northwest to Colada Shop. This Cuban Cafe is a new addition to the 14th Street/U Street neighborhood, but it is exactly what we have been missing!
I prefer to go in the morning before I start my weekend. When you walk into this charming shop you are met with vibrant colors and a fun atmosphere with upbeat music. I highly recommend the cafe con leche – FYI you can choose your sweetness level – I love sugar so I always go with the Miami Sweet option. After perusing the menu, I am usually left deciding between the guava and cheese pastry (Pastelitos) or Cuban bread with butter (Tostada), but you can’t go wrong with either option.
If you come later in the day, you should definitely try their empanadas. These small, flaky flavorful pieces of heaven are a perfect afternoon pick-me-up. They also pair perfectly with a cocktail on their patio while people-watching.
