DC is a big place for farmers markets in spring, summer and fall, and my favorite is the Columbia Heights Farmers Market – and not just because it’s the closest to my house.
The market, which operates every Wednesday 16:30 – 19:30 and Saturday from 09:00 – 13:00, has lots of farmers from surrounding states, selling produce, plants and herbs, meat, dairy products, bread, juices and a lot more, as well as coffee, craftspeople and other food vendors. I usually get some chewy, crusty bread and fruit plus some sausages from local butchers. They always have free samples, which you can never go wrong with, and the sausages are always awesome.
There’s also some other events that happen from time to time, like music or dance troupes performing, plus local craftspeople – I got some cool DC map and prints of Marion Barry (the famous ex-mayor) a while ago.
The market is a good spot for food for dinner, but they also have ready-to-eat stuff like quiche for a quick breakfast/lunch. Then you can head next door to vegan bakery Sticky Fingers for a cup of coffee and watch the people walk by.
Plus the market has a nice program called Festibucks, where lower income people can get their food assistance program funds matched, so anybody can enjoy the fresh food. Pretty neat stuff from a really nice market. They’re open every Saturday and startling in May will be open every Wednesday evening too.
