As mentioned previously, DC is a happy hour city. In fact, I like to refer to it as a drinking city with a politics problem. There are so many phenomenal bars in DC that specialize in all types of hip and modern cocktails. However, sometimes it is nice to just go to a low-lit bar and have a classic cocktail with jazz playing in the background. Denson is just the place to do so.
Denson came around a few years ago and although the location is a bit difficult to find (below Fuel in Chinatown…literally…downstairs) and is a bit underwhelming from the outside, as soon as you step into the bar, you go back in time to the Roaring ’20s. The bar uses simple and quality ingredients and the staff can provide you a brief history lesson about your beverage choice. You can also ask for a drink menu which will walk you through the invention of the classic cocktails that they serve.
Now, please be aware going to a cocktail bar like this can set you back a pretty penny. However, happy hour at Denson is quite the steal because you get a selection of the same quality beverages for $5 less. Be warned that Denson is gaining popularity so happy hour is getting a bit more crowded. I recommend arriving around 16:30 – 17:00 to get a seat at the bar.
