Each day, foul or sunny, intrepid vendors from all across the region wake at dawn to secure a parking spot on the streets ringing the National Mall. And then they cook, a wide array of food to offer visitors and downtown workers alike. The diversity of the DC Metro area is echoed in what’s available. Standard food truck fare like pizza, ice cream and hot dogs gets stiff competition.
From the south, burritos, fried chicken and ribs. From the east, shwarma, hibachi and gyros. Sub sandwiches, wraps, Philly cheese steak, burgers any way you like them, and don’t forget the fries (you can smother those in cheese too, if you like). Pick your favorite and find a bench, or join the crowds walking the Mall. It’s not all tourists, even on the weekends, for locals use this like a park, jogging or walking dogs, and babies. On a fine day there are often exhibits or concerts to partake in. And, of course, lunch.
