The Looking Glass Lounge is one of my favorite bars. Owned by the same folks as the popular Wonderland Ballroom in Columbia Heights (check the Wonderland article), the Looking Glass is basically its older sibling: a bit nicer and with a slightly more refined atmosphere (including some paintings and stained glass), but it still has the same fun, relaxed, convivial vibe.
The bartenders are friendly and they have some good deals – often a happy hour with a dollar or two off drafts, plus a bunch of shot-and-beer combo specials starting at $6.
The food is solid bar food too – it’s nothing fancy but all good. I’m a fan of the fried shrimp po-boy (a big sub with seasoned mayo), the turkey club sandwich with curly fries, and the monstrous nachos. The sunshine chicken sandwich with avocado and sprouts on a ciabatta bun is a good healthy option. Plus they have seasoned curly fries. Can’t go wrong with that.
Another thing I like about LGL is the downstairs – there’s a small, cozy bar and a patio with a few big picnic tables, a nice spot to bump elbows with strangers. They sometimes have heaters too on chilly nights.
They also have fun events, like my favorite trivia night in the city on Tuesdays plus DJs, comedy shows, a bring-your-own-records night on Mondays and more.
A good place for a relaxed drink (or three) or a meal with some friends.
