Maine Avenue Fish Market – Something fishy in SW

The Fish Market is one of these (rare) truly authentic DC spots, a real hidden gem. Most Washingtonians barely know it exists. And you can’t really blame them… it’s hidden underneath the overpass for interstate 395, in an area that’s not all that convenient to get to (especially right now with all the construction for The Wharf). But it’s worth the trouble of getting there for it is truly a feast for your senses (especially sight and smell) and one of the best spots in the city for fresh seafood.

The 200-year-old market is open 365 days a year and when the weather is warm enough you can buy pre-cooked seafood, like blue crabs in the summer, and have a casual meal at one of the nearby high tables overlooking the Potomac.

The Maine Avenue Fish Market will see some changes soon as the The Wharf, a $ 2 billion mixed-use development, is going to transform the Washington DC waterfront. The Fish Market will continue to operate but will become part of a larger market that will offer a wide range of products. It will be less authentic, and less of a hidden gem. And that’s really too bad…
