Even if you aren’t a sports fan, Nationals Park, home of baseball’s Washington Nationals, is a great time. I’m a big fan of the stadium’s modern design (steel, concrete, open spaces and great sightlines) and I like spending a sunny afternoon or evening at the park: it’s got a great atmosphere, good food and drink options and fun events like racing president mascots and post-game fireworks and concerts.
The season is underway now, and the team is exciting – but win or lose, it’s still a lot of fun to go to games. Anywhere you go in the stadium there are great views of the action, and I particularly like the cheap upper deck seats on the 3rd base side where you can see the Capitol Dome.
The stadium is also a great place to eat and drink: I like watching the game from the bars that overlook center field and the craft beer stands are well-stocked. There are all kinds of food options too: traditional ballpark fare like hot dogs and peanuts, tasty chili from local favorites Ben’s Chili Bowl and Hard Times Cafe. There’s also the extremely popular and delicious Shake Shack burgers, but the line there is too long for me. I’m also a fan of The Bullpen, a beer garden outside the park with live music and food trucks.
But the highlight of each game is the Presidents Race, where cartoonish mascots of famous American heads of state race around the field. Don’t miss it!
