DC has seen a plethora of Chipotle-style restaurants lately of all different cuisines where you line up, and choose the protein, veggies and base – and &pizza is my favorite. They’re a rapidly expanding local chain with locations around the city, and my go-to is the one on U Street NW right off the U Street Metro. It’s quick, tasty and fresh pizza — and pretty big, too. Can’t beat that.
Like the other Chipotle-style spots, you choose a type of dough (traditional, whole wheat or multigrain) then choose the other options like meat, veggies and toppings, or you can take the easy route and choose a combination from their menu.
Being a lazy person, I pick the Maverick, with tomato sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni, sausage, bacon, sopressata, parmesan and oregano oil. I usually add some greens and mushrooms too so it’s vaguely healthier. My buddy likes the Farmer’s Daughter, which is similar but adds fried eggs and spicy peppers. And if you can’t decide, you can do half-and-half too.
The pizza then rolls through an oven similar to how they toast sandwiches at Potbelly, and you have your pizza in a minute. The pizzas are all $ 8.86, though they also have salads, desserts, and a pretty good bottled drink selection, plus some beer and wine.
It’s certainly better than jumbo slice pizza or any chains, and you get a personal pizza. Definitely worth a quick bite before (or after) going out, although there’s not always a ton of seating.
