It seems like DC is becoming a real taco town: there are hip Mexican places like El Chucho, pop-up places that only exist for a few weeks or months, and all manner in between. A new entrant into the taco arms race is Tacos El Chilango, tucked onto a quiet block of V Street NW right off the U Street corridor.
The space is definitely no-frills, it’s just a few tables and a counter in a small, cozy row house, but the tacos are classic, fresh and tasty. They also serve Mexican Coca-Cola (with real sugar), beer, and very sweet but tasty margaritas.
It’s a little more expensive than you might expect from a little taqueria in a rowhouse (an order of three tacos and a margarita was about $ 15) but they’re quite good. I especially enjoyed the al pastor (pork with pineapple and onion,) and the lengua (a traditional taco with beef tongue, but much better than you might imagine.) They also have chicken, mixed, and veggie options, and pretty solid guacamole.
While being pretty no-frills, they also have some cool pop-art paintings of famous Mexican celebrities from the past, like wrestlers, actors and comedians.
A nice spot to fuel up before visiting local bars, or just a quick meal or snack. You might have to wait a bit during peak dinner times though. Or get it to go and find a spot outside somewhere (or a BYO food bar, like Solly’s nearby!)
